Sgraffito

Plan:

For my sgraffito project, I wanted to make a shallow circular dish that would be easy to carve on, I planned to cover the surface in a reddish-pink underglaze and carve small flowers all over the inside.

Reflection:

The overall shape of my sgraffito dish turned out good, but the carving process ended up being more difficult than I expected. A lot of the flowers chipped while I was working, and a larger piece broke off the edge before the dish was fired. Because of that damage, I decided not to add the clear glaze. Even though the design didn’t come out exactly how I wanted, I still learned a lot about how careful and controlled you have to be with sgraffito. If I tried this again, I would do a more spread out design that wouldn't chip so easily and I would take my time and be more careful.
