Slump Mold

Plan:
For my slump mold project, I decided to create a seashell-shaped dish that could be used to hold jewelry or small items. I wanted the piece to have a clean, simple look while still looking like a real shell. My plan was to press the clay evenly into the mold, smooth out the inside, then carve out the bumps on the outside of the shell.

Reflection:
My shell turned out good overall, especially in terms of the shape and the ridges on the outside. But the dish doesnt sit well on a table since the outside of the shell is round, it is more decorative than functional. And the lines between the ridges are a little messy since i went over them multiple times, I would have liked for it to look more like on solid line But the main part I wasn’t completely happy with was my glaze choice. The yellow ended up looking very bright after firing, and it didn’t match the softer look I had wanted. My plan was to do pink but there was no pink glaze left and I picked the yellow thinking it would be a lighter shade, I should have looked at the example beforehand but it was my first day using glaze. If I could redo it, I would pick a lighter glaze, like a light blue or off-white.

Coil Building

Plan:
For my coil building, I wanted to make a small round dish with a lot of detail and different types of coils.

Reflection:
Coil building ended up being hard for me, the clay kept breaking while i was coiling it. My first piece took me too long so I had left it on the storage shelf to continue next class but it had gotten too hard and broke when I tried to continue, so I started a new piece and that one fell apart when it was stored too. If I were to redo this, I'd use wetter clay, work faster, and attach the pieces better.

Sgraffito

Plan:

For my sgraffito project, I wanted to make a shallow circular dish that would be easy to carve on, I planned to cover the surface in a reddish-pink underglaze and carve small flowers all over the inside.

Reflection:

The overall shape of my sgraffito dish turned out good, but the carving process ended up being more difficult than I expected. A lot of the flowers chipped while I was working, and a larger piece broke off the edge before the dish was fired. Because of that damage, I decided not to add the clear glaze. Even though the design didn’t come out exactly how I wanted, I still learned a lot about how careful and controlled you have to be with sgraffito. If I tried this again, I would do a more spread out design that wouldn't chip so easily and I would take my time and be more careful.

Relief Carving

Plan:
For my relief carving project, I planned to make a turtle as the main design. My goal was to keep the background lower and smooth while making the turtle stand out as the main focus.

Reflection:
My relief carving didn’t make it to the firing stage because it broke while it was being stored on the outside shelf. Looking back, I realize the piece was probably too thick overall, especially on the turtle's shell. If I did this project again, I would make the whole thing thinner.

Choice Project

Plan:
For my choice project I wanted to make another small dish, I really like painting with underglaze and doing intricate designs so I wanted to do more of that.

Reflection:
I am very happy with how my piece turned out, it was very fun to make ended up looking really good. I like that the lines aren't perfect and are different sizes, I like the look of the imperfections; personally, I think it would look a lot worse if everything was perfect and symmetrical.
