Units 4, 5 & 6
Alebrije
Plan:
Originally I had planned to make a sea turtle, but, the turtle kept falling apart each time I had made it and for the sake of time I decided to do a simpler animal.
Reflection:
Overall, I like the way my alibrije turned out. I learned a lot about sand dollars as I researched it for this piece/poster. If I were to do it again I'd plan better.
Piece with handle
Plan:
My plan was to make a mug, I had never attached a handle to a piece before so I figured a simple mug seemed easiest.
Reflection:
I ended up making a small mug, I'm not very happy with it, but it was my first time making one so I'm not too upset about it. I'm not sure what happened to it, it disappeared after I put it on the shelf
Series of Four
Plan:
I had planned to make 4 plates/dishes. I ended up doing a heart shape because the other shapes seemed too boring
Reflection:
One broke, they were all stacked on top of each other and the top one fell off and broke. Other than that, I am happy with how they turned out, I regret not doing more of a design on them but I didn't have enough time. If I did them again, I'd probably do a design in underglaze.
Artist Inspired Final
Plan:
For this piece, I wanted to make a square base of clay to represent the water in Monet’s Water Lily Pond. I planned to attach lily pads to the surface of the square to give it texture and make the pond feel more three-dimensional. I also wanted to include the bridge from Monet’s painting so that the sculpture would have more depth and stand out more as a 3D piece instead of feeling flat. My goal was to keep the shapes simple and organic so the piece would reflect the calm and natural feeling of the pond.
Reflection:
If I had more time to work on this piece, there are several things I would change or improve. I wish I had been able to make the rails on the bridge work better, since they would have added more detail and structure. I also would have added more lily pads to make the surface of the pond feel fuller and more realistic. Instead of painting the lily flowers on, I would try to make them out of clay so they would stand out more and add more dimension. I was also disappointed with how the underglaze turned out, because I wanted it to look more Impressionist and like the painting, but it ended up looking more like I made mistakes with the paint colors. This project showed me how important time and experimentation are, especially when trying to achieve a specific style.
Lidded Box
Plan:
My plan was just to make a square box and glaze it, just a simple box because I expected the lid to be hard to fit perfectly.
Reflection:
I am not very happy with my box, the lid wasn't quite perfect and it went missing before I could glaze it. If i were to redo it, I'd think of a better method of creating a lid.
